I froze instantly, my hand flying to the hilt of my iron dagger. My heart hammered violently against my ribs.
From the darkness ahead, a pair of glowing, crimson eyes snapped open. Then another, and another. The low, guttural clicking sound of shadow-rats, the feral, magically corrupted rodents that nested in the dark, forgotten corners of the pack boundaries, filled the tunnel. They were the size of hunting hounds, their jaws powerful enough to snap through solid bone.
