Roman carried Haley again and I carried her changing bag. ‘You good?’ I nodded and he raised his fist and knocked loudly on the door. Almost instantly, the door opened and there stood a stunning woman. She was older, probably around Roman’s age and I knew straight away, she was Willow's mum. Wow. Just… wow. She was bloody beautiful! She greeted us with a friendly smile and a ‘’hello’’ before stepping aside and letting us into the house. ‘Well, it's good to see this little cutie pie again’. She told Haley, leaning forward and tickling her, She let out a small gurgle/giggle and I smiled. That was cute. ‘How are you doing?’ She asked Roman. He shrugged.

“Yes. Pancakes sound perfect.” --- Later that morning, Roman appeared at the kitchen entrance, watching silently as Adam flipped pancakes with childish excitement. He looked tired. There was a rawness in his eyes I hadn’t seen in weeks. But he said nothing. “Adam,” Roman said gently, “why don’t you get dressed and wait in the living room? I need to talk to your mom.” Adam hesitated, glancing at me for reassurance. I nodded. “Go on,” I said, wiping my hands on a towel.

Mom was a notorious madwoman at the card table. Her favorite pastime was going off the rails whenever she got worked up while gambling. During our family dinner, Mom's older sister, Tiffany Walker, praised me for being diligent and well-behaved. She said that I was bound to have a promising future now that I'd gotten into a top-tier university. Mom immediately slammed the table and snapped back, "What are you talking about, Mel? A young man like Frank who'd studied STEM still couldn't get into Horvard University. He's practically a failure!
