I stared at the note for a long time before folding it carefully and slipping it into my drawer.
When Ava called later, I tried to sound normal.
“You sound distracted,” she said immediately. “Everything okay?”
“Yeah, just tired,” I lied.
“Lena,” she said in that knowing tone of hers, “I know that voice. Spill.”
I hesitated, glancing toward the window where the sunlight was spilling over the crib. “Roman got a message last night. Something about someone from his past.”
“Oh, God. What kind of past?”
“I don’t know,” I admitted. “He said her name was Amelia. That she’s unstable.”
