Her voice came out as a whine as she pouted her lips, staring at me with those doe eyes. “Yes I do.” “You do not.” “You’re going to talk about your weird enemies-to-lovers fantasy.” She pointed at me accusingly. “Because the chemistry is literally vibrating through the apartment.” “There is no chemistry.” I corrected, taking a sip of the tea. “There is rage.” “Yes.” “That is step one to every romance.” Oh for crying out loud. I stared at her flatly. “You consume too much romance content.” “You’re in denial.” I took a sip of tea instead of responding.

I said softly, “how you can write multiple romances based on a single topic.” “Hm,” Rome murmured. “For example,” I continued, my thoughts flowing more freely now, “two people might meet at the same place. A cafe. A workplace. A school. But the way they fall in love will never be identical.” Rome leaned slightly closer to the railing beside me. “Why is that?” he asked. “Because people are different,” I said. “Their wounds are different. Their fears are different. Their hopes are different.” He nodded slowly.

"What do I need to do, sir?" His expression grew even darker. "Are you in for this bet?" "I'll leave it to your discretion," I answered. That response seemed to infuriate him. I could see his grip on his wine glass tighten, his knuckles turning white. "Fine, let's bet." The cards were dealt, and the game was on. I did not get the rules of the game, but the vibe? That I could read like an open book. Everyone was as still as statues, barely breathing.

"You like mysteries?" "Sometimes." "Better than romance novels?" My face heated. Had he seen me looking at that shelf? Had he been watching? "Much better," I said firmly. "Romance novels are... unrealistic." Something flickered in his eyes. Amusement maybe. "Are they?" "Yes. All that instant attraction and forbidden desire and enemies becoming lovers. It doesn't work like that in real life." "Doesn't it?" The way he said it—the slight emphasis, the look in his eyes—made my stomach flip.
