I pulled down a thick historical romance with a brooding duke on the cover, it was exactly the kind Mirabel would tease me about, and sank into one of the leather armchairs. The cushions hugged me perfectly. I kicked off my slippers, tucked my legs beneath me, and opened the book to the first page. The words pulled me in immediately. Rich descriptions, sharp dialogue, the slow burn of forbidden attraction between the heroine and the man who was supposed to be off-limits. I lost track of time, turning pages steadily, the outside world fading until there was only the story unfolding in my hands.

After a pause, she added, “Forget it. I shall not read books like that. Please recommend a few novels with strong female protagonists to me. She has to be dominant and doesn’t rely on men but herself to achieve success. “I don’t want novels that claim the female protagonist is strong but ends up needing the male protagonist and side characters to solve her problems.” Jasmine thought about it for a while before walking to the last bookshelf. He had been surprised to discover his mother had a stash of Harlequin novels on her side of his parents’ bedroom. The titles of the stories had followed a similar theme like ‘The Billionaire’s Secret Wife’, ‘Forced Marriage’ or “The CEO’s Mistress’. It hadn’t taken him long to work out that they were slushy romantic novels with lurid covers.

But when she looked into his eyes, they were dancing again. She smiled shyly. “I started writing a novel. And…I drew out the character after you.” He raised a brow. “Really? What type of novel?” She shrugged. “Historical romance. You were a rogue knight. For sure you were a rakehell.” She giggled. He asked. “Was there a red-haired damsel in distress?” She stared back at him. His eyes were sparkling. She nodded shyly. “And how did that turn out?” he asked.

“And I think he thought it was romantic.” I was wheezing now, wiping tears from my eyes. “Elena. That sounds like something a Bond villain says before detonating the planet.” She raised her glass. “To eco-romance and emotional scarcity.” “To Mr. Mining Corporation,” I said, laughing, “may he never get poetic again.” Elena grinned. “Honestly? I’m kind of obsessed.” We dissolved into laughter again, the kind that left my chest a little lighter. The kind that felt like it belonged to the girls we used to be before reality made everything harder to carry.

We’ve all read them right? Those sappy romance novels, the ones where some handsome stranger rescues the damsel in distress. He’s wealthy like no other and adores the ground she walks on. There’s some life altering event, a struggle of some kind but it gets resolved and they live happily ever after.
