He wore a navy blue tailcoat trimmed with a black velvet collar and cuffs. The gold buttons twinkled and winked at me. The white shirt beneath had ruffles and was tight around the neck. Matching slacks with gold buttons were tight around his waist and fell above his ankles. Ethan’s hair parted on the left side of his temple and had been brushed back.

A red sports car rolled to a stop, and Rowan stepped out casually, his smirk already in place. He spotted Irene first. She had paused near the steps, and he gave her a polite nod. “Good evening, Irene.” She froze but answered softly, her voice nervous. “Good evening.” Curiosity flickered in her eyes as she studied him. Rowan bowed slightly, ever the gentleman. “Rowan Northman. Dante’s best friend and Beta.” Her eyes widened at his words. She glanced at me, our eyes locking for the briefest moment before she quickly looked away.

The alphas of the clans stand on either side of it—six in total including Robert the acting Wolf King. Ethan leads me to one side of the platform. From the far end of the line-up, Blake catches my eye. He looks very different from the disheveled male I encountered earlier. He’s changed out of his scruffy clothes and is wearing an elegant black coat with silver buttons, over a dark shirt and breeches. “How did it go with Blake, anyway?” asks Ethan under his breath. “I... kind of. . .well...” I fight the flush of embarrassment. “I hit him.”

He glared, the tension in the air shifting as Rowan’s eyes darkened. Rowan Whitmore had lost his mum at the age of ten and even though the poor woman spent her life battling cancer, she genuinely cared for her family until she took her last breath. But Rowan’s dad, Mr. Charlie Whitmore had gotten married just three weeks after his wife’s death. Rowan and his siblings had been so shattered to find out that their dad had married someone else so soon, and he deeply resented both him and his stepmother for it. Rowan’s older brother, Kai, had been the most vocal and disapproving about it. He would always taunt his dad at family events with it. He was more rebellious than Rowan.

“Not ever.” His hands were warm. Steady. His eyes—my eyes—were wet. Behind us, someone shifted. Theron, usually the steadiest of them all, looked like someone had pulled the foundation out from under him and replaced it with lightning. His hands twitched, wanting to reach, to check, to confirm in every way his training knew. Rowan scrubbed at his face with the heel of his hand, laughing a little too loudly. “Look at us,” he said. “Four grown men undone by one little hybrid with a glowy wrist.”

He could be a king on his own. “Pardon our rudeness, Miss Veronica,” he speaks politely and bowed before meeting my eyes, “I am Rowan Rozeiros.” Nolan rolled his eyes and complained, “You can't greet her like that! You're making us look bad, R.” The man named Rowan turned to him with a stern look, “Sebastian's gonna be livid once he finds out we sneaked around here.” “It was Nolan's idea,” quipped Declan. “Why am I always the scapegoat?” Nolan protested with a frown.

My wolf surged inside me and my frown deepened before I recognized the man in the picture. He was Rowan Black, son of Alpha Liam from the Black Moon Pack. I knew Liam almost personally because he was always seeking Damon out, trying to get him to set up a business meeting between us probably to get me to invest in his business. I knew Rowan was Rachel’s cousin and Rachel was Katie’s best friend so they must have known each other for a while since they've been in the same circle. And since Rachel was at the party, that must have been why Roman was sitting with them.

His shoulders look narrow and weak underneath a fancy ivory ceremonial tunic, decorated with a fresh white peony flower pinned to his chest. "Yuck," Rowan spits out, her ears flattening in pure disgust. "Who in the hell are you?" I step forward instantly, using my massive frame to shield her entire body from his sight. "I am Tristan Whitlock!" He announces his name with a puffed chest, as if my wolf is supposed to drop to its knees in fear.

I turn toward it. Rowan stands beside us, wearing a black formal shirt with the top buttons undone and a fitted matching blazer. His dark hair is styled neatly and his brown eyes are sharper than usual, warm and intense at the same time. He looks dangerously good and it is unfair how much my body reacts to seeing him. Gonalz explains, “We cannot reach Alpha Bronze.” I swallow and add in a low voice, “I cannot either.” Rowan lifts a brow. “Did he have some pack emergency last night?”
