"When are you going to ask your human sister to move out of my house?"
"But, we've discussed this before and I told you..."
"I don't care what you've told me," Jack had interrupted Anna before she could even reply and my heart shattered, "what I care about right now is that our son will be of age soon and he'll have to live in that guest room so your human sister should start preparing to pack out."
"But I'm her only sister and she has no where to go to," Anna had wailed.
"And like I said, I don't care about that. Have I not tried enough? How many werewolves will allow a human to live with them for as long as I've allowed her to live with us…
The conversation that I overheard between my sister, Anna, and her husband, Jake flashed through my mind and it twisted my stomach into knots. It wasn't the first time I'd overhear their conversation about me but the weight of Jack's words was more impactful this time around and it made me feel like I have to do something as soon as possible about my situation.
Of course, it has always been about that. It had always been about the fact that I was a human in a werewolf world. The fact that I had no wolf had always been my bad luck since I was born. I grew up in a pack orphanage and the manager told me that I was abandoned at birth by my birth parents because I was wolfless.
I was constantly bullied and picked upon by other kids in the orphanage because of that and I was only lucky to have picked the eyes of a man called Jimmi when I was eight. He was the one who adopted me and took me away from the orphanage. He didn't care that I was an abomination in the wolf world, he took me away from the town to the city and his house, and he made me his adopted daughter and he introduced me to his biological daughter, Anna who was older than me with a couple of years.
At first, I thought Anna was going to be like those mean kids in the orphanage who enjoyed picking on me because I was weaker than them and because I doubt shift and change but she proved me wrong. She took me as her sister immediately, braided my hair, played with me, and made me feel safe and secure.
Both Jimmi and Anna made me feel the kind of love I never thought I could feel, they made me enjoy the city which was even better than the small town where I was adopted from. The city was big with big schools and good education and the wolves didn't really have that much pack consciousness compared to the ones in the town.
Then Jimmi wanted me to get a good education and know more about the wereowlf world so he tutored me and helped me apply for the werewolf school and I got in.
As the only human in the school, it was always worse in the gym class when others could shift and I was reminded of how different I was from them. Some students would rub it in my face and remind me that I was an abomination and that I didn't deserve to exist in their world. It always makes me feel bad, always makes me lonely and angry at the fact that I was the only different one.
But Anna did not make me feel lonely, she was always by my side, and she was always defending and standing up for me.
With Jimmi and Anna, I never thought I could be so happy.
But that happiness didn't last long, when I was fifteen, Jimmi came down with a chronic disease that gulped all our money and he eventually passed away. It was a dark phase for Anna and I, we thought Jimmi was going to be with us till old age but the cruel hands of death didn't allow that to happen.
When we eventually gathered ourselves because we had to move on, we realized we had no money again, all the money we had had gone into Jimmi's medications and hospital bills and little we had wasn't even going to feed us for a month not to talk of other important bills.
Because of me, Anna had to drop out of school and work so she'd be able to pay my school fees. I didn't want her to because I didn't want her to give up on her own dreams because of me but Anna would have none of that. To her, I was her baby sister and she'd do anything for me.
I studied clothes design at the university, and after graduation, I was able to open a clothe store that fetched enough money to share the bills with Anna but she was married now and she was always getting into constant fights with her husband because of me.
I didn't want that to happen again.
And if I didn't want that to happen, I had to move out of the house.
But even though I could afford it, I couldn't just go out and get an accommodation for myself, Anna wouldn't allow that. The only way she'd allow me to do that was if I was getting married and moving in with my husband.
And that was the reason why my taxi was gliding into a stop in front of the Pack Clerk.
I inhaled and exhaled as I clutched the documents do my chest. I knew it was a risky thing, what I was about to do but I had no other option. If I wanted Anna to live happily, this was the only thing I could do for her. And she deserved to be happy because she gave up her own dreams just for me to be able to fulfill mine.
I sighed before getting down from the taxi and with each step towards the entrance, I was reminded of the huge and life altering decision that I was making.
I was getting married today and Anna doesn't even know about it.
But it wasn't like I could help it.
We live in a werewolf world and the males weren't interested in me.They all wanted their partners to be their kinds and not a human. So when I helped an old woman who was almost hit by a car three months ago by diving into the street and pushing her away at the expense of getting myself knocked down, she was super grateful at my selfless act and asked me out for coffee a few times after that day.It was during our coffee time that she brought up the idea of getting married to her grandson. I thought she was joking so I waved it off but she insisted that I should marry him, that their family didn't care about my human identity as long as I could be a good wife to her grandson.
Initially, I didn't want to consider her offer, but with the incessant fights between Anna and Jack over me, I knew I had to accept the offer.
Today was when I was going to sign a marriage document with a man that I didn't even know what he looked like."Katie, is that you?"
I turned around at Mrs. Hillson and my lips stretched into a smile.
"Yes, Nana," I kissed her on both cheeks before straightening up again.
"Good!" she clamped her hand over mine, her eyes twinkling with gratitude, "you made the right decision. So this is my grandson and your future husband, Dominic Hillson."
Her words made me register the presence of the male standing beside her. He had been engrossed with his phone until he heard his name and that was when he looked up.
His deep ocean blue eyes met mine and I almost combusted at the intensity in them. His eyes were so blue and clear and enthralling that it almost seemed like a crime for eyes to be that perfect.
Just like every other part of his face was perfect too. His face looked well-sculpted and it looked like a face that should only be reserved for fashion magazines.
I wasn't expecting him to be this handsome because Mrs. Hillson had told me that he was almost 30 and didn't even have a girlfriend so I concluded that the reason why he was single was because he was ugly and couldn't get any girl to like him.
But this face looked like one that could get a hundred girls without even trying.
"Shall we?" he said coldly, shocking me, he didn't even bother with the introductions, "I have more important things to do at the office."
Wow. A thousand retort were at the tip of my tongue but I bit them down when I noticed that Mrs. Hillson was smiling apologetically at me.
I exhaled before following him inside.
A couple of minutes later, we were done. I was now Mrs. Hillson and I was married to a man that I barely knew, a man that had spoken rudely to me.
And I wasn't even sure how to feel about that.
"Here," his color voice made me stop and turn to him to see that he was holding out a bunch of keys for me.
"What for?"
"The house keys."
"Ohhh," I stretched out my hands and he dropped the keys rudely on them.
"You can move in tonight or tomorrow," he continued, "and because we'll be living together, I have some ground rules."
What?
He wasn't even deterred by my expression because he continued anyway, "don't get into any trouble, I have a reputation to keep."
"I'm not an errant child."
He didn't pay any mind to me as he continued, "our marriage is to be kept away from others except for families and friends."
"I'm not interested in publishing our marriage either."
"Good! The last rules; stay out of my business, don't infringe on my privacy and don't touch me."
My mouth dropped open and I was still trying to gather my thoughts when he flagged down a taxi for me.
This was going to be one hell of a wedding.
"You need to stop this madness, son.""Stay out of this," he spat at her. Then he brought down the metal rod.But the rod didn't pierce my skin.Malia had come between the two of us at the last minute and the rod was pierced through her side. She crumpled to her knees as she groaned in pain. Blood r
