Rowan stared at me like he was trying to memorize every detail of my face, cataloging features in case this was the last time he'd ever see them clearly.
"You don't come back from people like him," he said quietly, the words sounding like they were being pulled from somewhere that hurt. "Not intact. Not unchanged. Maybe not at all."
I held his gaze steadily, refusing to look away even though seeing his pain made this exponentially harder.
