Amara reached out and touched Oscar's fading form. His outline remained visible, but her hand passed straight through it.
Oscar's phantom held out a cup of coffee, a quiet smile in his eyes. "Amara, have some coffee."
As though he could sense her reaching for him, his smile deepened.
Amara turned her face away. She could not bear to keep looking. As she did, the image dissolved.
'Father always said that people are like plants,' she thought. 'At the height of their flourishing, they begin to wither. They return to the earth, enriching it, and the next season grows stronger because of it.'
