she yelled, tears pouring down uncontrollably. “No, please,” she screamed repeatedly, her voice echoing in the emptiness. Her family was everything to her, and now, they were falling apart. She couldn’t believe the nightmare her life had become. Unable to bear the loss, she moved toward the edge of the cliff, despair clouding her mind. She wanted to end it all. Her mother was going to be locked away for the rest of her life, her brother and unborn child were gone, and her husband had ended their marriage. The crushing weight of her losses made death seem like the only escape.

By the time I stumble back into the living room, the house is unrecognizable, turned upside down, drawers open, and shelves stripped. Burner steps toward me, unshaken. “When she returns, you call me. If you help her hide, you’ll only make it worse for her.” His gaze cuts through me like steel. “Do the right thing, Mr. Creed.” And then they’re gone.
