And when their fingers brushed by accident, neither of them pulled away too quickly. It wasn’t perfect. But it was something. --- Meanwhile: Maya Stark’s Quiet Plans Maya Stark stood at the edge of a rooftop overlooking the financial district. The wind teased her sleek black coat, her heels clicking softly as she stepped closer to the ledge. Below, the city pulsed with life. Businessmen. Lovers. Innocents. Pawns. She’d waited long enough. Alex Banks had shown his weakness—again and again—for that woman. Clara was his tether. His vulnerability. And Maya had no interest in mercy.

I would go into the vault, find the box, get the clue, and we would leave fast. I had never met Maya in real life before. Only on a screen. Gabriel brought her in like she was nothing but code and a smile. She was small, with short hair and too-quiet eyes. She carried no gun. She carried a laptop in a soft bag. She smiled once at me and I felt like I had asked a dangerous thing of a child. “Are you sure you can do this?” I asked her. She looked up with teary eyes. “I break bank doors and bank minds. I’m good.”

Harriet’s tea when she heard the laugh—bright, young, familiar in a way that made her think of Marvella’s eyes. A young woman stood by the roses, curls catching the string-light glow, a small gold hoop in one ear and a restlessness in her posture that looked like ambition’s cousin. She was speaking to Marcus, rapid and warm, hands moving. He was smiling in a way he reserved for only one person in the world. “Maya,” she said, and the name arrived just as Ava realized it. Maya du Prée turned. Her face held her father’s steadiness and her mother’s mischief. “Ms. St. James,” she said, offering a hand that meant both respect and testing. “I’ve heard a lot about you. And the internet has heard a l

CHAPTER SIX: NEW FOUNDATIONS The bank's conference room felt unnecessarily formal, all polished mahogany and leather chairs that squeaked when you shifted your weight. Maya smoothed down her pencil skirt for the fifth time in as many minutes, glancing at the door. Luca was late, which was so unlike him that she had already checked her phone twice to make sure she had the correct time. "More water, Ms. Chen?" The loan officer, a well-dressed woman named Patricia Dawson, gestured to the half-empty glass in front of Maya.

Every rip sounded like a scream she couldn’t let out. “You don’t win today,” she whispered to her reflection in the locker door. “Not today.” Then Savannah appeared, smiling for the cameras. “Guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” she said sweetly. “Or should I say—trash doesn’t fall far from the dumpster?” Laughter again. Maya clenched her fists. “You think this makes you powerful?” Savannah leaned closer, voice dripping venom. “No, darling. This makes me unforgettable.”

She peeked through her fingers, her eyes examining the bleak, dark road ahead, and shuddered. She could do it. After all, she loved to exercise. Only this wasn't one, she was tired, angry, and worst of all, orgasm deprived. Alex had better hope they don't cross paths again. Maya stomped forward, determined not to look back, not until she reached the safety and warmth of home. She hadn't even walked five feet when something shiny and black skidded to a stop in front of her. A surprised squeal escaped her lips, she jerked back so suddenly she tripped over her own feet but quickly recovered before toppling to the ground, "Oh, my gosh."

For the first time in two lives, Maya stands in the center of a disaster and has no move. I have one, LUS says. She cannot answer. The voice is slower than yesterday. Frayed. Each word reaching her as though carried across a distance that did not exist before. I modelled APEX. I know the signal. Marcus drops to one knee. Torres makes a sound without language in it. I can jam it. Maya finds her voice. “Do it.” A pause. Too long. Not cleanly. “I don’t care.” I do not have clean left.

It covered just enough while still looking cute. I was adjusting the vest when my phone rang. Luisa, of course. Miss Zero Patience was on the line. “Maya! Are you writing your will in there? We’re going to a bar, not a presidential inauguration!” “Alright, alright! I’m coming!” I grabbed my cute little crossbody purse, slipped into my two-inch Jimmy Choo stilettos (because even exhausted girls deserve cute shoes), and hurried out the door. The second she saw me, Luisa raised a perfectly arched eyebrow. “Skinny jeans? And why are you hiding those assets behind that vest? Girl, we’re hunting for fun, not blending into the wallpaper!”

"You didn't just save the pack, Maya. You saved me. When the blast happened, the bond didn't break. It solidified. I found you in the snow because I could feel your heartbeat like it was in my own chest." Maya looked at her bandaged hands, the reality of the last forty-eight hours finally sinking in. She was a private investigator from Brooklyn. She had a cat to feed and a landlord who didn't take "werewolf coup" as an excuse for late rent. "I have to go home, Cillian," she whispered. Cillian nodded, though a shadow of disappointment crossed his face. "I know. My drivers are ready whenever you are. Your bank account has been... adjusted. You’ll never have to worry about rent again. Or the ne

If she tried to warn Ronan or Jaxon, I'd make sure the consequences were even worse. By tomorrow night, one way or another, Maya Rivers would be nothing more than a cautionary tale about girls who reached too high and fell too far. And I would finally be the center of attention, the one everyone talked about, the one who mattered. Just like it should have been all along.
