He wrote that he was “giving my body to be burned, with love in my heart,” hoping to break his community’s silence over racial atrocities—particularly the lynchings, beheadings, and threats that had plagued Grand Saline's past. He called for repentance and urged both his hometown and the broader nation to confront entrenched racism.

Throughout his life, Moore had pushed against injustice through less dramatic means. For Moore, the gesture was meant to jolt people out of complacency and into moral reckoning.

The event inspired a powerful documentary, Man on Fire (directed by Joel Fendelman, premiered 2018), which revisits Grand Saline and attempts to untangle the layers of history, faith, denial, and sorrow surrounding Moore’s act.
