My men were still investigating the crimes, and whoever they were, they were bad for business, and they were risking exposing our kind to the humans. I couldn't have that. I assumed they were looking for my attention, but since the deaths started, there has been nothing, no clues whatsoever. So, I was starting to think there was some rogue out there that had been kept in the streets by some rival gang I wasn't sure about. There was the problem of Azeal too. Rogues were sick wolves that ate humans and thought of them as subordinates to us. While I bought into that ideology, I couldn't afford anyone going around my fucking city making me look bad.

Isabella moved first. The struggle was quick, brutal in its efficiency rather than gore. Aura lunged, the vial flashing. Isabella knocked the hand aside, the vial skittering and shattering against the hearth. The sound seemed to make time tilt. Aura advanced with a cry, fingers reaching for Isabella’s throat. Isabella fought like a mother possessed. She struck, shoved, used the bookend to batter open space between them. In the scuffle, Aura slipped on the spilled preserves and went down hard. The bookend clanged. For an instant, neither moved.

Their faceless heads twisted toward Lena, as if sensing the Riftfire thrumming in her veins. She didn’t give them a chance to strike.

Rain had begun to fall not the gentle rain of mourning, but a harsh deluge that turned dust to mud and made the stones slick with a mixture of water and blood that pooled in every crack and crevice. Aldric's generals twisted beasts of curse tore through what remained of Hollowshade's defenses like wolves through paper. These were not the shambling dead I had faced before, but creatures of pure malevolence, crafted from the darkest corners of the Cursemaker's imagination and given terrible life by Aldric's will.

From the swirl of colors came a bright light. From the balcony Ursa watched the light, and her soul filled with dread as she saw a creeping black shadow overtake and corrupt the light. She saw Orlov make a signal with his fingers, how the men and women surged forward and took the creatures on in groups. Exceptional teamwork for an exceptional genocide. Already she saw many get mowed down in great numbers. The creatures did not lag behind in their numbers either. They, too, fell like insignificant flies.

Despite their numerical advantage, I remained confident in our training and the strength of our resolve. As the battle commenced, both our forces and Ruth's fought fiercely, driven by a will to survive. I observed Ruth's wolves crying out in pain, their roars echoing as the twins chanted incantations, suspended in mid-air. Their hair billowed around them, their white eyes gleaming, and their long fingernails crackling with power. Their chants, in a language unknown to me, resonated with a potency that sent shivers down my spine, warning all not to underestimate them.

Creatures only heard about in stories, and so much more! Feral couldn’t see very clearly but he could hear the commotion loud and clear, these vicious creatures which killed without a care in the world were being so…. humane, just like him whenever he thought about his own coming of age. It made them look so innocent but the blood in their hands said otherwise. ‘How bizarre,’ Dina thought complexly. It was quite true that right and wrong had always been undefinable, what may be good or normal for one would turn out pure evil for another and vice versa.

And outside, the world moved on, but inside the villa, a new dawn had begun—a dawn of love, of family, and of a future that was theirs to shape. The storm was over. The battles had ended. The air thickened, pressing against my skin, filled with the unnatural presence of the creatures Raven had brought into our ranks. As I entered the chamber, dozens of glowing red eyes flickered open in the darkness. The creatures shifted, their elongated limbs moving with eerie grace, their twisted forms half-wolf, half-something else. They weren’t like us. They weren’t bound by instinct or honor. They were hunger. They were death. One of them stepped forward, tilting its head as if studying me. Its mouth parted slightly, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth. I tensed. I was a warrior. A leader. I had seen things that would break lesser men. But standing here, in this cavern filled with creat
