IT STARTED WITH A LIE AND ENDED WITH US.
It was a long ride to the southern part of the country, one that seemed to stretch into forever with the endless roads winding like rivers through quiet towns and thick clusters of trees. The bus rattled and hummed as if it, too, was weary of the journey. Every so often, we stopped for breaks—short pauses so people could stretch their stiff legs, ease themselves, and grab something to eat.
On our last stop before the journey’s end, Justin disappeared for a short while. I hadn’t said a word about being hungry, hadn’t even looked his way expectantly. Yet when he returned, he carried with him a piece of grilled fish wrapped in foil and a cold bottle of Sprite.
