The Blood-Stained Sour Candy
I hugged my aged father, my regretful mother, and my accomplished brother.
A breeze blew through. The candy on the headstone lifted into the air. It spun once like a red butterfly and flew off into the distance.
Goodbye, Mom. Goodbye, Dad. Goodbye, Liam.
I had tasted enough of the bitterness this world had to offer. This time, I was going to taste the sweetness that remained.
The wind died down. Sunlight fell across my headstone, warm and gentle.
It felt just like that afternoon when I first walked into the kitchen and lit the stove.
