It was a view to savour. Dad buzzed the gate and security took his name. "Stephan Salvatore." My father states and the gates opened a second later. We walked to the door and knocked. A woman opens it, her uniform similar to a maids from a movie. Jeez these people have to be ultra rich, a maid in this economy does not come easy.

“Rosa, you didn’t see the news?” Rosa blinked. Her round eyes turned curious. “Hmm? What news?” Aria’s face tensed. “Oh, right. You don’t really use your phone much. I almost forgot...” She hesitated, glancing away before continuing with an uneasiness. Rosa blinked. Her big and round eyes tilted up with curiosity. “What is it? Tell me.” “Well, two nights ago, the Salvatore Mansion, um.. it caught fire around midnight. Reporters said the entire place was burned to ashes.”

The Salvatore mansion was bigger and larger than ours. It had large rooms I couldn’t make out of what was in them. As I followed the lead of one of his men, the one I could sense was Dominico’s second in command, I ran my eyes through some of the doors facing the corridor on the right. When I thought our journey had come to an end and I would soon have to spill all the secrets that made me run from my home like a criminal on the run.

Down the stairs to the main floor. The compound at night felt different. Quieter, more menacing somehow. The security lights cast strange shadows and every small sound made my heart race. But I kept moving, trying to remember the layout Rosa had shown me. Salvatore's office was on the ground floor. That's where he'd be keeping important documents, records of family business. Including security reports. The door was locked when I tried it. Of course it was. I stood there for a minute trying to decide if I should attempt to pick it, wondering if I even knew how, when I heard footsteps approaching.

Salvatore laughed, a sound like breaking glass. "Your reputation precedes you, certainly. But times change. Power shifts. And right now, you're outnumbered." "Am I?" Before he could answer, one of his men came running toward us from the direction of the SUVs. His face was pale, panicked. "Boss," he said, breathing hard. "We've got a problem." "What kind of problem?" "Two of our warehouses have been burned down. The ones on the south side." Salvatore's face went deadly still.

“Business.” That one word hung between them, laced with too much history and too little explanation. Mr De Vito leaned back in his chair, his expression unreadable. But I saw the way his jaw tightened. The way his fingers curled slightly on the armrest. The way his eyes never left Salvatore’s face. And Salvatore? He looked amused. “Thought I’d check in on the project,” Salvatore said lightly. “The Salvatore hotel. Construction’s going well. Your team’s efficient.”

Salvatore reached forward and pressed the intercom button. "Take us to Velvet House," he instructed the driver, his voice perfectly steady despite the fact that I was still positioned intimately across his lap. I had no idea what Velvet House was, but something in his tone made my blood run cold.

“I received your pictures. I don't know what you want from me but you can't get it. It won't work,” “Ahh! But you want something from me?” He exclaimed, his voice itching with excitement. “Come, let's talk in my board room,” “I see you have a warehouse filled with products begging to be sold,” Jericho spoke as we walked up the stairs. “We happen to have clients that are ready to take them all off your hand,” “For a f*e of course,” He chuckled. . “So the rumors are true. The Salvatore had gone broke, looking for affiliate gigs,” “You yap like a child. If you want to mock us, why bring us upstairs to your board room?” I asked.

“Dinner out here. On the balcony. It’s better company than the walls. The night is cold, and it is only a matter of time before winter hits. And normally, that might call for no more dinner in the balcony if it is snowing. I wouldn’t mind, but I am not the one who puts the rules in this place.” “At this point, I believe that you do.” He said, making me smile.
