Theresa was old enough to have experience, but looked young enough to please Salem’s eyes—two key requirements for a housekeeper in his home. “Where is Salem now?” I asked. A good feeding would soothe my nerves. “He’s not at home, my lady. I couldn’t tell you.” Grumbling, I headed to Salem’s library. Perhaps he had a book I could entertain myself with. Once there, I found a book lying open on a desk. It was titled Mythic Bloodlines: Lost & Fabled Lilitu. Curious, I studied an illustration on the open page. It depicted a trio of strange-looking women, just like the ones Salem had been painting all this time. The accompanying text stated:

Then, to the right, and at the end of a long row of books, one book jutted out from the shelf. I pulled it out. It didn’t have a name. It was a leather-bound volume, and its cover had a skeletal hand clutching a wilting rose. I opened the book, skimming through the pages. My stomach turned at some of the rituals inside. Selene was too arrogant, too vein, to resort to grave robbing, and there would be no need to stitch me together if her plan was to take over people’s bodies as she had before. The Binding.

I backed away, hugging myself, shaking so hard my teeth chattered. “Kyle…” Tears spilled down my cheeks. “Don’t let them take me.” The door burst open with a crack, and I jumped. My parents stormed in, their faces were red with rage. Behind them were Kyle’s parents; their eyes were cold. And then the others: men and women in black robes, collars glinting, rosaries hanging. A group I never expected. Bishop Callahan. Mother Superior. Monsignor Rivera. And two other priests whose faces I knew from years of services. A holy firing squad.

I press my lips into a thin line and move on. The third grimoire is thicker, darker, filled with the more obscure records I’ve gathered over time, rituals and warnings, fragments of older traditions. My pulse picks up slightly as I flip through it, hoping to stumble across some half-lost truth. I even find references to cursed wolves and blood-bound shapeshifters, but still… no mention of that name. No mention of those red eyes. I lean back, exhaling hard. Just as I’m about to give up, my eyes land on a fourth book, small, unassuming, bound in dull gray hide. One I almost never open. It’s handwritten and filled with anecdotal entries from witches who lived long before my time.

Her gaze swept the pack, ash scent a whisper, their fire her anchor, the bonfire’s warmth a promise. Cora’s voice cut through, low, resonant, amulet pulsing, gray eyes piercing. “Ash rises, children—older than blood, hungrier than frost.” Mist whispered, grim.
