Stories scream too loudly in the dark.” Sandra sat across from her. “What are you writing?” “Our lives,” Gail answered simply. “Every fight, every betrayal, every small miracle. People think families are clean and perfect, but ours—” she gestured around them “—ours is cracked like clay. And yet it holds water. That’s worth writing.”

Instead, she slipped back inside, keeping her voice low as she leaned close to Sandra. “Sandra,” she whispered, tilting her chin toward the car outside. “Someone’s looking for you again… it’s Jessica Lopez.” Once again, Vicky was struck by her coworker’s composure. Sandra didn’t so much as blink at the sight of a renowned writer waiting outside for her. With the same calm detachment she always carried, she walked out of the shop, her expression as unreadable as ever. “Why come all the way here?
