With Christmas just a few days away, I decided it was time to do some shopping. I got Mom’s gift earlier in the year, but now we have Dad, Chris, and Elizabeth. I still wasn’t answering Jesse’s calls or texts, but I know I need to at some point; I just need to figure things out. I have some money in savings, but it would only last me, maybe a month if I’m lucky. I brushed the worrying feeling off and focused on what was happening now. I’m home for the holidays, and I might get published, so maybe things will work out better.

A little boy with brown hair, and brown eye stomped up the stairs, put his hands on his hips, and glared at Joe. “Hello Carlton. I know Santa Claus doesn’t exist.” Alec snorted, stroking the dogs' heads, as if it was absurd for anyone to think that a 9-year-old boy could still believe in a children's thing.

Grandpa used his hands to talk again to play up the story. “He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, and away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight— ‘Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!’” Grandpa smiled as he closed the book. “Now it’s time for little ones to be in bed so Santa can bring you gifts for being such good ups this year.” Grandpa knelt and kissed each of us on the forehead, even Lando. “I love you all. Now, let’s get you all tucked in.”

She was trying to be all nice to him, make him happy, and then when she's gotten him where she wants him, she'll ask for the money. But for now she'll focus on pleasing him. They got dressed together after, Claudia humming softly as she slipped into her coat, Brandon watching her with a thoughtful expression. “You ready?” she asked. “Yeah,” he said. “Let’s go.” The Snowbrook Christmas nativity was exactly what Brandon remembered. The beautiful nativity scene, an old tradition of younger children playing the birth story, this time it was different. There was no Melody, there was no Jamie and Cynthia, there was no giant bubblegum bubble competition between the four of them.

"Are you sure you're okay with this?" Jaxon said low and careful from his place at the door to the living room, his hand resting on the frame. His eyes were on me, like he was trying to gauge whether I meant it when I said everything was fine. I stood at the window, staring out as snow fell in languid flakes, casting a pale luminance over everything in sight. Christmas was looming, yet somehow, it didn't feel quite as festively joyful as it had other years.

However, I must admit this one display caught my eye for a very different reason. I take in the white-lighted reindeer dangling from a lighted tree containing what is left of Santa’s sleigh. A trail of red lights falls from the reindeer’s head and pools in freshly fallen snow. I have never seen a Christmas massacre and I doubt I ever will again. It is marvelous. I laugh because I honestly can't help myself. For once, humanity surprised me. I say out loud, “God, I'd love to meet the person behind this.” A lady wearing a dark woolen cloak with flaming red hair asked, “What would you say to the creator?”
