Rosaria Goodbye. The saddest word one can ever say to a loved one. I wonder why there’s a ‘good’ in that word because there’s nothing good about it. No matter how it is said, it always causes heart break. Whether it’s a child going to college and temporarily leaves his or her parents. Or a loved one moves to another town. Sometimes it may just be an employee leaving a workplace he or she had gotten accustomed to.

Though it doesn’t make it any easier. I didn’t want to say goodbye before he left, because that plants the feeling that you might be saying farewell forever. No, I will never say goodbye to him. “See you,” “Until we meet again”—those are the best farewells, full of hope for a future reunion and obligating it to happen. I must admit, Lena’s story yesterday affected me deeply. And not just me—Jasmina was also in shock from what she heard. The world and everything around us now feels different, and I know I will never perceive it the same way again.

I opened the messaging app and typed: [Don’t bother coming. I’m already home.] I hit send. The screen went dark. The house fell completely silent. I leaned back on my couch and closed my eyes. The small, stubborn hope I held onto finally faded.

I lessened him like the little boy he was to me years back. “And I know this aunty, but, why didn’t he think to say goodbyes, at least, why make me find out like that,” he said almost tearily. “Because saying goodbyes is hard, and also because he wanted to leave his space open, goodbyes will close our spot, but when we don’t say goodbyes, we can always return,” I answered and he looked at me innocently as though to search my eyes to know if I was really being honest, but then, I was.
