As the rep of the crossword club walked out of the students council room dejected, I watched Liam grab another paper and go over it. “What is this opening ceremony in art club? Fifty balloons? No way, y’all are gonna cause global warming. Cancel it.” he said and tossed the paper aside. “Debate club needs money for new printing papers? Next time, when you print something, use both sides.” he tossed the paper aside again. “Music club needs another AC? Don’t turn on the ac if it’s not hot. Use the fans.” he tossed the paper aside again. “Come on, Liam. It’s hot everyday. It’s either hot or hellfire hot.” the music club rep objected.

“You know Mr Hale?” “No, not him.” he said, standing from his chair. “Jace. let’s take this to the couch over there. I would like you to feel as relaxed as possible.” I stumbled out of my chair. “You know Jace?” my surprise was evident in my voice. He took the armchair facing the couch. “Not better than you. But yes, I know Jace. We’re rivals in chess club and also in debate club. Your friend was a very good cheat, I’ll give him that.”

He said in a more stern voice. “Yes, we agreed upon the vision of the Occult Club having the Halloween event be as magnificent as it can be, but not to the point of traumatising the participants.” Excami retorted back, annoyance being more evident to her voice as she still found this part being exaggerated just being for the sake of what the Occult Club wanted. “And besides, please consider the students. Not everyone is fond of the scary stuff unlike the Occult Club. In fact, most of the students here are a scaredy cat!” This time, Excami shouted.

Maya hated that it worked on her too. “Some of you are here because you’re interested in debate. Some because your friends dragged you. And some because you heard there’d be free food.” Laughter rippled. “There’s no free food.” He added. “Sorry to disappoint.” More laughter. Easy. Natural. He knew exactly how to work a room. “I’m Idris Vaughan, final-year Architecture and Debate Society president. In the next twenty minutes, I’ll try to convince you that joining us is the best decision you’ll make here. Then my colleagues will debate so you can see what we actually do.”

I thought this was supposed to be a minor face off, guess I was wrong. “Relax, you look so scared, I'm not going to bite and you are totally welcome to join the debate club. We could use more members for now and you don't even have to be good. We'll brush you up or in your case make you a whole wig,” I wasn't sure how to respond to her sarcastic statement. I was definitely not scared of her– uncomfortable, yes, but nowhere near scared. “I'm not sure debating is for me, but you did pretty well,” I answered simply, trying to kill her with kindness like my mother always said.

*Flashback* The campus was buzzing with students who were chattering away. It was the first day of the Spring semester and everyone was back from their vacations, ready to start their new classes. Several clubs had begun to recruit members, setting up booths and stalls to promote themselves using creative means. “Join the Business Club and get your businesses started!” one of the students shouted. “Debate Club is where you can express yourselves freely!” another student shouted. Many of them were attracting interested members who gathered around all the stalls except for one.
