Their grips were professional, as if they’d practiced this motion a thousand times. The air grew colder as we descended. A smell hit me old dust and something metallic, like the bottom of a neglected sink. Light thinned; the stairwell opened into a room that smelled of bleach and fear. A heavy door swung inward and bodies moved me through it. The basement swallowed light. The single bulb above swung on its wire, its glow slicing through the dark like a trembling heartbeat. Shadows clung to the corners—thick, breathing things that refused to die.
