Pim looked at her mother, who was staring at the light with a mixture of terror and avarice, and then at Chalida, who was reaching for her hand.
"Pim," Chalida said, her voice shaking. "We aren't the creators anymore. We’re the subjects."
The glass of the floor-to-ceiling windows began to spiderweb, under immense pressure from the outside, or perhaps the inside.
"Hold on!" Pim yelled, lunging for Chalida.
But as her fingers brushed her sister’s, the blue light expanded, engulfing the room in a flash of blinding, static-filled white.
When the light faded, the study was silent.
