Anonymous mentioned old sci-fi books in passing, referencing a classic series about rogue AIs and lost space colonies. Anonymous: That series is underrated. The way the characters question everything in those abandoned worlds… hits different on nights like this. Leon paused, thumb freezing mid-air. He actually liked that exact series. It was one of his quiet escapes, the dog-eared paperbacks hidden under his bed alongside other secrets. A common interest. He hadn’t expected that. For a moment, his skepticism wavered. Still, he replied carefully, not fully opening yet. Leon: Yeah. Some of those books are okay.

“That’s very Slaughterhouse-Five of you.” For those who don’t know, Slaughterhouse-Five is probably the most famous book by Kurt Vonnegut. Although it’s an anti-war story about the firebombing of Dresden during World War II, it’s also a science fiction novel. Among other insane plot points, the main character and a woman he’s never met get abducted by aliens and put in a zoo on the aliens’ home planet, where the extraterrestrials watch them exactly like humans would watch a pair of chimpanzees in a cage here on Earth.

Frankly, this program had been a lifesaver. Janice was never a big reader before being imprisoned, but she quickly learned about her fondness for Science Fiction novels, especially from the thirties through the fifties. Those novels and short stories fell under the umbrella of “Space Opera.” It was in these stories of warfare and exploration, valor and bravery, she found solace from what had occurred since that night at the House. In fact, these books sometimes seemed like the only thing that kept her sane. “Oh, thank you! I've been hoping for something to read, to keep my mind off...” Janice trailed off.

The air smells of paper and wood. Comforting. Familiar. A warmth spreads inside me. I love reading. Always have. Without thinking, I move toward the shelves, my fingers gliding across the spines of books. Titles blur past until one section catches my eye. ‘Sci-fic’ A small spark lights inside me. I step onto the platform, reaching up for a book. As I open it, my eyes skim the page, already slipping into another world. Then— Something shifts. A scent. Strong.

As soon as my head hits the mattress, I find myself being pulled into another dreamless slumber. “I wonder what kind of furniture they pretend to be. Chairs? Dressers?” “Mostly beds.” “Smart aliens.” She hums, flipping a page. “They vibrate when aroused.” I turn my head to look at her more fully. “Seriously?” She keeps reading, dead serious. “I don't joke about what I read.” “Right. So let me get this straight. You’re lying beside me, in bed, reading a book about horny alien furniture?” “Do you have a problem with that??” “Why would I?” I say. “I’m just surprised. One would think you read hardcore sci-fi, but all the while, you're into alien p**n.”

"Oh yeah, looks like you've been busy this summer." "It sure has. So, Daddy, you know I like to read a good mystery every year, even though I don't have much time to enjoy it," she continued, flipping to September. "That is true. But I also happen to love reading science fiction. What about you, Mr. Holmes?" Laughing, he shook his head. "Not really. I prefer fantasy novels. But I do enjoy reading about aliens and space travel." "Space travel?" "Yep. I've always wanted to go to space. I've seen pictures of it, but I've never actually been there."

“Yes, that's exactly it. That was very insightful. What other authors do you like? “Oh, several. She looked at me then. Her eyes sparkled as she spoke. “I've read all the classic science fiction authors, of course. Asimov, HG Wells, Frank Herbert. I especially love science fiction when it intersects with horror. "So you're a big Lovecraft fan?"

"Any favorites?" Scott joined her by the bookshelf, scanning the titles. "Oh, there are so many. I enjoy science fiction and fantasy genres the most. Some of my favorites include 'Dune' by Frank Herbert, 'Ender's Game' by Orson Scott Card, and 'Harry Potter' series by J.K. Rowling. But I'm always open to discovering new books too." Fiona nodded, impressed by Scott's literary tastes. She herself was an avid reader and appreciated finding common ground with him.
