Aiden The nightmares started subtly—shadows twisting in the corners of my vision, whispers on the edges of sleep. At first, I brushed them off as nothing more than stress. Stormclaw was in disarray, our defenses faltering, and with the revelation of Gregor’s betrayal still fresh, it wasn’t surprising that my mind was a battlefield. But as the nights wore on, the dreams grew sharper, more vivid. They weren’t just nightmares anymore—they were visions. Prophetic visions. And though I tried to ignore them, they clung to me, lingering like smoke long after I woke.

Many have tried. I smiled impishly, “Tried and failed.” I told biscuit who just wagged happily. I gathered my easel and blank canvases beginning setting up. Those dreams or hallucinations, whatever they were, were so vivid. They mean something I just have no idea what. I must get them out of my head so I could see them, process them and clearly focus. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I pushed my mind back to the dreams. The one with Selene. Who was she? What did she mean, “You are of me?”

You told me about them and I promised to always be there for you to protect you. I knew what I was talking about, one of my biggest fears. And I had several. Sometimes I had sleep paralysis, it was horrible not being able to move you, I felt like I would be trapped. I told Jay about it, I remember well what I told him: I'm afraid of being trapped in one of my dreams...I mean, in one of my nightmares. I'm afraid of going to sleep and not waking up afterwards. I'm afraid of not knowing if I'm living a reality or if it's all a figment of my imagination. I have many fears.

And I remember my dreams in crystal clear intensity. In the dream I am sitting in a field of green wheat, the stalks bend lazily in the wind and I marvel at the grains. Each one is distinct and though different from the others, still perfectly formed. I run my hand along the edge to feel the combination of rough and smooth and then hold my face upward to feel the warm light of the mid summer day. The air smells just right and the birds fly in an almost cloudless sky. I start walking, the filed goes on forever and after a while my feet become roots, digging into the soil. My hands become green, soon I am also wheat, and I wave happily in the wind.

I coyly smiled at him as I asked, “What are you talking about? How do you know what I'm dreaming?” “I know because every time you have that dream you talk in your sleep. You talk about Laylan, Artimous, Grealan and Ivy. Then you're hard to wake up after that. I was just curious as to what your dream was about,” he finished and his lips curled at the edges into a smile.

Once we were at a safe distance from Irene and other wandering ears, Selene turned to me. “Last night, I had a dream… and you were in it,” she started to say, making my heart stutter in my chest. “I knew I had to come see you right away. I’ve learned from my past that I cannot ignore dreams. I come from a line of Seers, and in my family, dreams usually mean truth.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. “You dreamt of me?” She nodded.

My breath hitched as pain shot through my skull, white-hot and unbearable. It was as if the dream realm had come alive, fighting back against the intrusion of something unnatural. I clenched my jaw, pushing past the pain. The connection between us was there—I could feel it. A fragile thread linking us together, flickering like a candle in the wind. I reached for it with my mind, trying to strengthen it. The dreamscape quaked violently, sending fractures across the sky like shattered glass. A deafening hum filled the air, growing louder as I fought to hold on.

Lis suspected that since I have seen Jacinda in my dreams and spoken with her, that I would have some sort of control in the dream world, but I was feeling discouraged and doubtful. “This doesn’t seem to be working.” I groaned in frustration as I sat up on the bed. I was fully dressed and trying to dream without sleeping. Lis said that she knew a seer once who could manipulate dreams and find or visit others in their dreams, but she didn’t actually have to sleep herself to do it. “I’m exhausted and we haven’t made any progress!” I pushed my hands through my hair, gripping it between my fingers and pulling it back from my face.

Laying on the ground, unable to breathe, a coldness overcomes her as she feels the bottom of her body completely numb. What's happening? A reaper leans over her as its long nails claws through her skin, and she experiences every bit of pain as its mouth is 20cm from her, sucking her life out, losing breath until she passes out. Waking up, it's 02h32am. She is sweating. Was this real? Why the sudden dreams? She walks to the kitchen, having an appetite and rubbing her stomach. This life inside of me growing changes her mood. Some days she wakes up happy, others sick and not in the mood for anyone.

The dreams didn’t help. They came sharper now, more vivid. Not just fire—but him in the fire. Darius, screaming. Reaching for me as flame devoured his skin, his eyes turning black with agony. Each time I woke, drenched in sweat, the scent of smoke clinging to my throat. It wasn’t just nightmares. The Seer had said they were glimpses of a future that hadn’t happened yet. If I didn’t stop it—it would. On the fourth day, the foreign delegation arrived.
