People no one watches.” Lyra’s spine tightened. “Who watched you?” “No one,” Senna said. “That was the point.” The words landed hard. “Where did the messages go?” Lyra asked. Senna hesitated. “To the eastern barracks. Sometimes the west wall. Sometimes nowhere at all.”

He reached out, grabbing her wrist, intending to pull her into his arms. Suddenly, a sharp glint of silver flashed. Senna raised a knife she had long hidden and pressed it against her neck.
