The vessel’s shields flickered and died, and the ship plummeted into the ravine, disappearing in a ball of orange fire.
But there were more. Dozens of small, black shapes were dropping from the clouds, landing in the snow with heavy thuds. The Sentinels. They didn't move like men. They were a swarm, their blue eyes cutting through the white dark.
"They're hitting the perimeter!" Kael shouted, grabbing his spear. "Adrian, stay with her! Don't let her break the connection!"
Adrian dropped to his knees behind Lydia, wrapping his arms around her waist. He pressed his forehead against her back, his own silver markings beginning to glow in sympathy. "I’ve got you, Lydia. I’ve got you."
