Her growls rolled up the staircase like thunder, even making me a little scared.
“Shut that fucking dog up,” Serena snarled.
“Leave her alone,” I shot back, heat rising in my chest. “She won’t stop because she senses danger. Maybe because you’re pointing a fucking knife at me.”
Serena tilted her head, studying me with this cold, hollow expression. “Valentina,” she whispered as if my name personally offended her. “You were supposed to help me. You were supposed to understand.”
“I did understand! God, I’m literally trying to help you! You’re the one trying to kill me!”
