The Queen is Man
he muttered, his hand twitching toward the leather grip of his sword but falling short, his fingers curling into the dry thistle heads on the floor.
"I'm here, Ethan," I said, sliding the sapphire ring off my thumb and dropping it into his open palm, closing his fingers around the metal until the setting bit into his skin. "But the Queen is gone. The line is finished."
I picked up the child from the canvas wrapper. He was dry now, his skin pale but clear of the black lines, his gray eyes looking up at the rock ceiling without a sound. I wrapped him in the remains of the scarlet silk robe, the bright fabric looking like a fresh wound against the gray snow of the path.
