I wake up the next morning with a smile on my face. It's my seventeenth birthday! I'm not really that happy about it, because I know my heart is going to be broken, in some way today. I know I will find my mate today. Not who which of us will do the rejecting, but I know it will be one of us. Not really too crazy about that idea, but that's kinda the story of my life, so far. Why should today be any different? Am I bitter about it? Not really. It's just the way it is. I have no control over it, and I can't change it. All I can do is go with it.

“Don’t Jamie me. I’m not twelve. I don’t need either of you fighting about what’s best for me.” He looked at Julian, then Levi. His voice shook, but his hands were fists at his sides. “I choose for myself. And I choose him.” Julian’s lungs emptied. Levi’s face shattered. “You don’t mean that,” Levi whispered. “I do,” Jamie said. “And if you can’t accept it, then maybe you don’t know me as well as you think you do.” The silence that followed was unbearable. Julian wanted to reach for Jamie, but he stayed still. This wasn’t his victory. It wasn’t even about him.
