The tea steam curled in lazy smokes between us. “I feel dirty,” I said finally. The words slipped out before I could stop them. “Like I’m covered in something I can’t wash off.” “You’re not,” he said. His voice was gentle, but firm. “You didn’t do anything wrong.” I wanted to believe him. God, I really did. But shame is tricky. It sneaks in, even when you know it doesn’t belong to you. "You shameless jerk!" Chloe snapped, anger boiling within her. Was this a threat? How could someone be so despicable? "I'm shameless?" Amos retorted, fury in his eyes as he grabbed Chloe's hand, pulling her closer and pinning her against the car, making her immobile. "You're clearly mine, yet he dares to claim you. She didn’t help. I was truly alone. And Grey wasn’t done yet. “Crawl over,” he commanded. And like some cursed puppet, like some animal without dignity, I began crawling to him. Slowly, I opened my legs. I felt so exposed even though I still had my nightgown on. His eyes burned right into me. Fuck. I was really shy, but I told myself to be bold. Chloe was bold. I had to try. No matter how hard I tried, I could never fully be someone I was not. This man traumatized me. He had killed me once. I could not forget that. Fear sat heavy in my chest, but I pushed it down.
