He pauses briefly, then says, “You can call me Damien. After all, we’re going to be relatives.”
I nod, shaking my head slightly to agree.
But I can’t say anything before the car jolts with a screech, throwing me forward. I feel myself lurching toward the windshield, heart hammering, and then a firm hand catches me, holding me tightly.
“Are you okay?” Mr Shaw asks, his voice low but steady. “Are you hurt?”
Though I’m not physically hurt, my chest tightens with fear. I try to control myself.
