Alan scooped her up in his arms and took off out of the hunting grounds like the wind, while Hank tore a strip from his shirt and hastily wrapped it around her wound. I wanted to call for their help, but I had no strength left. My injuries were severe.

After kneeling in the snow for so long, I blacked out after only taking a few steps. When I came to, the white ceiling and Thomas' face came into view. He'd returned to his usual, stern composure. With a cold expression, he set a steaming bowl of tomato soup on the bedside table. "Have you learned your lesson?" I stayed silent and kept my head down, refusing to meet his eyes. My knees still ached, and after three whole hours of being out in the cold, my throat hurt so badly I could hardly speak.

When my mom ran in, I didn't have the strength to move anymore. She saw me lying on the floor, my wrist soaked in blood. She completely panicked. "Kevin!" She lunged forward and scooped me up. Her hands were shaking as she pressed down on my wound. Her voice trembled. "Stay awake! Look at me! Open your eyes!" But I couldn't hear her anymore. My hearing aid had fallen out when I fell. I could see her lips moving. I could see the color draining from her face. And in that moment, I felt so tired. More tired than on any single day in the last three years.
