There was a moist spot at the center from his own needs. “I’ll take you,” he said roughly. “All of you. No matter what you say to yourself, you’re mine. From the top of your head to your cute feet, every inch of you belongs to me and I will claim you. No one else gets to touch you but me, beautiful.” His words should worry her. He sounded so possessive. But instead, she rubbed her cheek on his hand. “Stay with me.” The whole world had gone to hell. How could she go on a date with some other shifter when this one rocked her world to the point of seeing double?

That she was mine. That I was hers. And that even if the world tried to tear us apart again… I wasn’t letting go.

“He wants me dead.” “He wants to control you,” Adrian corrected softly, “but he just made the biggest mistake of his life, because he's touched my world.” Her chest clenched at the way he said "my world", because that was what she was to him now. You’re strong enough to wear my brother’s ring and live in my family’s world. You think you built that strength alone?” He closed the final steps between them. He didn’t touch her. The space between their bodies hummed. “Take it. Take your pieces back.” He held his open palm out, the artifacts of her youth resting there.

He began to turn her around in the air. “Stop it!” She yelled out, but struggling to hold back her life. They were so happy… in love. Wow.. they really did love each other. I stood there watching them play…tears welling up in my eye. Then— From around me, the world began to shake violently…the ground under my feet was unstable now. Then the world began to shatter. “No! Not yet!” The words tore out as I strived to reach them, and… Gone!

"They took her." Dad's face went white.

Because they’d claimed her back. Later, as the room emptied, Xander took her hand. His voice was low. “You could’ve had the world.” She leaned into him. “I never wanted the world,” she said. “I only wanted to change it.” He kissed her forehead. “You did both.” That night, the fires glowed in the windows. The pack feasted in the square. Laughter floated like music across the stones. Old songs were sung with new names, and children chased each other under the rising moon.

“The world does not erase what it loves. It rewrites it.” She stumbled back, shaking her head. “No… no, I wanted to save them, not—” But the figure was already upon her, hand pressing gently to her heart. The warmth that flooded her chest was both love and oblivion. You can’t hold both, whispered the voice of the world. So it held them for you. Her knees buckled. She fell into the figure’s arms — into their arms — and for one unbearable instant, it felt right. Kael’s strength. Draven’s fire. Their scent, their heartbeat, their presence. Everything she’d lost, returned.
