I was definitely putting the cart before the horse. As soon as I dropped Charlie off at Middle School Wednesday morning I headed home. My heart was already beating a little faster thinking about lunchtime. Sandy was coming over! I'll admit I didn't get a lot done on what I was working on, although it was definitely better than that horrid manual had been. This was an anthology of short stories from an independent publishing house that I'd worked for before, with all the authors under twenty-four years old. The clock seemingly was moving at a glacial pace, but eventually my phone chimed.

His body, which I knew from the look of it was hard, was perfectly defined in his white sando. When the bell rang, I groaned in frustration. That was already two hours? That wasn’t enough! I want to watch him more in this state, fantasize how rough he is on bed, and how good he is a fucker. I could say that that was the shortest two hours of my life. “Hello, Lila! Finally you answered your phone. I’ve been calling you for almost an hour now.” Mira, the landlady of the dorm I was bedspacing at, loudly said in my phone.

The Book Club: Where Your Desires Come Alive. Corny as hell, but desperate times, right? The girl at the front desk asked if I wanted the VIP experience. I nodded without a second thought, eager to drown out the sting of rejection with something new. Maybe there’d be wine and sappy romance novels. Maybe I’d leave laughing at how ridiculous it all was. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I love books, and seeing this one lying on the floor hurts my heart. Looking around, I pick up the book and tuck it underneath my hoodie, the glowing stops immediately. It doesn’t take long for me to get home, and when I do, I pull the book out of my hoodie. “You poor thing.” I mutter as my fingers tremble on the yellowed pages of the book. Oh, I forgot to introduce myself, I’m Skyler, the girl who stutters through small talk, who hides behind oversized hoodies and thick glasses because words always tangle in my throat when real people are around.

Both Subh-Dil and Barkha were engrossed in their talks that they didn't realize when the night melted and morning spreads to the sky. ••• "Stay here for one more day." After breakfast, when Subh-Dil and Ammar got ready to leave, Barkha whined on the door. "We will come to meet you again." That's all Subh-Dil manages to say. She also wanted to spend more days with her best friend, but she knows, one more day or week won't be enough for both of them. No matter how much time they would spend together, they will always feel upset when leaving each other.

I was left standing alone in the darkness of the night like a clown that no one cared about. I made an appointment for an abortion on my phone. Then, I turned to leave. I'd spent the past 15 years trying and failing to win Benjamin's heart. If that was the case, I didn't want it anymore. It was late at night when I returned to the nearest town. I got a room at a hotel and drifted off into a restless sleep. In the wee hours of the morning, I was jolted awake by the ringing of my phone. My superior at the TV station sounded anxious yet excited. "I heard a 5.3-degree earthquake happened at the old settlement near your location. You need to head there immediately to get the latest scoop!"

Her fingers, skilled and careful, had traced the spines of volumes on law, history, and war before they closed around a simple, unmarked book of vellum. It was not a history. It was a collection of letters, intimate and raw, written by Alphas to their mates across generations. The words were so visceral, so full of longing and possession, that she found herself whispering them aloud, her voice a soft murmur in the quiet room. “I would have you on your knees before me, not in supplication, but in celebration. Until now, strange short stories had only very short stories. But from volume two I intend to add stories that have 10 to 20 captains as well. These stories are not so long nor have so much visibility as a separated book. For this reason, I decided to move all then into strange short stories, that is already a storybook of different themes.
