The neighbors knew about it, and because of this, no one respected the family or helped them with anything.
As they were leaving, Magdalena looked into the storage shed where Tamia had taken shelter. Surprisingly, it was not nearly as dirty or stinky as the “house" itself. Poverty was certainly visible there, but the old and weakened Tamia was still somewhat more capable of looking after herself than Nazi, an uneducated and unintelligent woman.
