"If I were her, I'd probably pretend to be mute and stay silent for years too. That voice is enough to make anyone want to gouge their own ears out!" My desk was kicked over, sending all the books scattering across the floor. Alice yanked my hair hard, then she raised her hand and slapped me across the face. "I'm talking to you, Summer! Your mute act is over, and now you're deaf? Can't hear anyone, right?" I shoved her with all my strength. "Let go of me!"

Marcus Silence is a funny thing. You think you want it, until you’re staring it in the face and it’s not peace at all. It’s absence. It’s unanswered texts and calls that don’t come. It’s Sophia retreating into a version of herself I can’t reach. I tell myself it’s fine. I tell myself people get busy, that she has a life outside the orbit of mine, that not hearing from her for a day isn’t a tragedy. But I don’t believe myself. Not really.

Not even when meeting the Gravedigger. The silence that exists when a song ends. The pause between notes. It has always been there, between every sound the choir makes. We never noticed it because it was small. But the choir grew too loud. It woke the spaces between the music.

“No backlash. No rallying.” Julian nodded. “Good. Let the silence do the work.” Back in the apartment, Aiden sat at the table long after midnight, fingers laced together. “I don’t know how to fight something that doesn’t push back,” he admitted. Dante rested his hand on the table between them—not touching Aiden, but close enough to anchor him. “You don’t fight silence by yelling into it.” Aiden looked up. “Then how?” “You outlast it,” Dante said. “And you create sound elsewhere.”

We both stand there, cold wind freezing the blood in our faces as we look over the city lights and at the frozen waters far down below. “So what do you do when you come here? Nothing?” I ask. “Silence. I enjoy the silence,” he tells me simply. I pause before speaking again. “I hate silence, it’s boring and scary, and… I just hate being left alone with my scrambled thoughts,” I tell him. “Sometimes silence can mean not entertaining your thoughts too. The sound seemed to come from the tree itself, from the rustling of its leaves. I pressed my palms against the rough bark and closed my eyes, focusing on the whispers. " Come... find... me..." The words were faint but distinct. My heart raced. Was I losing my mind, or was there something more to these whispers? I stood up, brushing the dirt off my jeans, and took a few steps back. The whispers grew louder, more insistent.
