I rested my head against the recliner and gave myself over to the scents and sounds around me. I could taste the Carnival food on my tongue, salty and sweet. I could hear the light tune of joyous music playing, coupled by the sounds of laughing children and chattering adults.
Every so often I’d feel a stinging pain radiate over my back. Some spots were more sensitive than others. As the needle grazed over my shoulder blades, I sucked in a harsh breath. The pain lasted only a few moments, and my mind continued to wander.
