“Daddy will chase the monster away.” The basement stairs creaked under my weight. The air grew damp and cold, carrying the familiar smell of concrete and forgotten Christmas decorations. I swept the beam across dusty shelves, old furniture covered in sheets, and stacks of boxes labeled “C9” in black marker—my wife’s obsessive filing system for holiday stuff. Nothing. No glowing eyes, no claws, no growling shadows. Just silence and cobwebs. “Nothing here, Lily!” I called up the stairs, my voice echoing slightly. “Just junk. Come down tomorrow and I’ll show you.”

I cross my finger behind my back. It's been quiet and odyssey to get Justin's group to attend the fair. Tonight was finally the Halloween celebration and there was a special event there. The place would be all dressed up, and there would be modified attractions like a Haunted House and starting at ten pm they would put a the Elm Street saga on the outdoor theater. After all the preparation and how a lot of seniors had participated, practically everyone was going, but Justin's group almost decided to stay home and have a marathon on their own.

Claudia bites back, and what happens next is so fast I couldn’t have seen it coming. He pushes Claudia against the wall, breathing down her neck heavy, and loud. Claudia slowly turns pink, taking in low, shallow breath. “You threaten her life? Are you insane?” Sirius’s voice comes out in a chilling whisper that makes my bones feel brittle. “You have disrespected her for the last time. The next time you do so I will cut your tongue out and make you swallow it back along with your blood.”

Zoe teased, hopping onto the bed beside her and tugging at the pillow until Chloe gave in with a reluctant grin. Melinda climbed up too, sandwiching Chloe between them like she had no escape. The air lightened in an instant, the tension, the weight of last night, even the sting of Valerius’s name seemed to fade with their laughter. Zoe stretched her arms dramatically. “Anyway…speaking of fun things. I talked to Diana yesterday.” Chloe peeked at her suspiciously. “Diana? Oh no, what is she scheming now?” Zoe grinned. “She invited us all to a Halloween theme park. You know, one of those nighttime amusement parks with the creepy haunted rides, jump scares, mazes, full-on scary season.”

June murmured. "You are not June," Sirius snarled. He quickly wrapped his fingers around the imposter's neck tightly. "You are the one who bugged my phone," Sirius hissed and pressed the tip of the sliver arrow against the imposter's throat. The imposter coughed before changing their shape and revealed who the person was. Sirius immediately stepped away and frowned. Hailey gasped for breath and slide down the floor, coughing. "What are you doing here?" Sirius demanded. He had heard of Hailey's special abilities, every werewolf had one but she was the last person he had expected to come across today.

Gabby froze. The front door opened, and Gabby's neighbor of nineteen years, Mike Willison stood before him, holding a plastic mixing bowl full of chocolate candy bars. Gabby made her move. "Trick or Treat!" Gabby shouted, opening her cloak. Mike Willison's eyes went wide at the sight of the naked female body before him. His jaw dropped, and he found himself at a loss of what to say. Gabby giggled, and shut her cloak. "Happy Halloween!" Gabby shouted, and ran off down the driveway back to the street.

His eyes were pitch black, and his breathing came out in ragged and distorted snarls. “The parasite,” I mumbled. All the elders were getting swallowed by the darkness. First it was Elder Ed, then Elder Bow and now Elder Sirius. Elder Sirius lifted his head in slow motion, making the atmosphere even more dramatic, then he laughed most inhumanly. “You thought the darkness would retreat so easily?” he rasped. Zane stood on the spot, placing himself between me and the advancing figure. “What have you done to yourself?” he growled. Elder Sirius’ twisted grin widened, “I stopped resisting, as I should.”

She’d added teasingly, and I’d resolved to ask her endless questions once this was all over. “Half past six,” Molly said. “We open at seven. Okay, guys: let’s go turn on the music and the lights, and then get into our positions. Do you all have your radios?” I wondered how Molly would feel if she knew a demon was most likely going to spoil her plans for a hitch-free Halloween event. At the very least, half of her committee would be pre-occupied with the demon, rather than making sure that the mannequins were all stood stock-still as they waited for her punters.
