The black centers of those fixed glass eyes, which should have been nothing more than painted beads or static crystal, shriveled into pinpricks, reacting to the light exactly like a human eye.
My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird in a cage. I jerked the light away, plunging that specific shelf back into darkness, but curiosity—that treacherous, survival-killing instinct—forced me to swing the beam back. Now, the Jester’s eyes were wide again, black and deep, but as the light touched them, they squeezed shut into tiny dots once more.
