I think about Kai this morning, sitting at the small table in our room at the Halverson building, eating his breakfast with the careful concentration of a child who has been told to take his time with everything because rushing makes his symptoms worse. His fingernails flashed silver three times while I watched him eat. Three times in twenty minutes. Two months ago it was once a day. The Fade is accelerating.

A faint unease. Like a beautiful song approaching its final note. Her gaze slowly lifted. Toward the Dreamer. The ancient being still watched them all. Still smiled. Still radiated endless silver light. But now she noticed what she had missed before. The light was fading. Very slowly. Almost imperceptibly. Yet it was fading. The smile left her face. Beside her, Kael noticed too. His expression darkened. The Dreamer's eye shifted toward them. For a moment, no one spoke.

Errors get smoothed out, quietly. Water stays untouched. A bowl sits where the servant placed it, slowly losing warmth. Silence fills the room, thick and unmoving. Strands of hair fall flat against my neck. This rough garment, once worn to flee, now wraps me like cloth for the dead. The sharp scent of hopelessness clings close. This changes things. Not with a crash like I thought it would. More like water wearing stone. Each tiny piece slipping away. One speck at a time. Now the outline of her begins to blur.

Silence settled across the city. And then, faintly, softer than ever before, I heard it one last time. Not static. Not code. A voice. Gentle. Content. The system fading away completely, saying, “Happy life, my hosts.”

The colors start to fade, and before I knew it, I was fading…. Then I was gone.

I ask. "Delightfully." We sway to the harmony as the night slowly fades away.

‎Not pain. ‎Not joy. ‎Just a vast, gray evenness. ‎They stopped choosing. ‎They stopped feeling. ‎They stopped loving. ‎The light did not go out. ‎It simply ceased to matter. ‎The Fade spread inward, slow as twilight. ‎Healers found their hands empty, no wounds left to mend because nothing ever broke anymore. ‎Lovers found their bonds intact but weightless, like holding smoke. ‎Children played, but their laughter was polite, not wild.
