The East Wing is for the scholars, and the West is restricted unless permitted.” She kept talking and I zoned out. Because what the hell was this? At the center of the hall stood the Sanctum of Mirrors a vast, glowing circle of crystal platforms arranged like petals. Each one shimmered in a different hue, representing a Castle: Noctis, in black and red flame. Lupaxis, in molten gold and deep earth tones. Wyverndale, in blue and silver stormlight. Tenebrae, in lilac and dark velvet hues. The first years, still buzzing with nerves and awe, were gathered in the center ring. They stood on the pale, neutral crystal where no colors yet burned, unclaimed.

It was peace. We lay tangled under silk sheets, whispering about baby names, imagining what they’d look like, how we’d decorate the nursery, how we’d handle midnight diaper changes.
