I quickly pulled the dark book of light in front of me and placed the locket on it. I heard the sound of sizzling and crackling as if something was happening. But I could not be sure of what it was. Nymeria came to stand beside me and watched the book with bated breath.

His eyes that were so focused on the book, lifted slowly to mine,his hazel eyes unreadable, and I jerked, turning back to the kettle. It was boiling. I shook my head, my cheeks flushing in embarrassment as I hurried to turn the burner off. How had I not heard the kettle whistle? I thought to myself. Are you begging for a punishment, Sapphire?! I placed the kettle along with the cups and tea pot onto a golden tray, my heart pounding as I gripped the firm handles and walked up to him.

The wooden boxes fell into her lap. For a moment, Miss Lena closed her eyes, trying to imagine her son’s face — his dimples when he smiled, the softness in his cheeks — something pure and worth protecting.
