--- We decided to start small, testing his reactions without revealing our full strategy. First step: movement. Small, deliberate actions in places we knew he watched. Walking past known anchors, leaving subtle markers of our own presence. We watched, noted, and analyzed. His responses were always swift, calculated, subtle. Sometimes a note, sometimes a shadow glimpsed from a corner, sometimes nothing — which often spoke louder than any action.

W͟i͟n͟t͟e͟r͟ One step at a time right? Scoooot. Step. Scoooot. Step. See? Not that hard. Really not that hard. Even as I think those words, my body fights against me. Lots of slow, shallow breaths, inching forward until I'm just barely shuffling along. Shuffle. Shimmy, shimmy. Shuffle. I take another slow sliding step forward.

There is no room for mistakes this time, we have to get it right. I had carefully written down everything we needed to do, step by step. Now it’s time to bring them all back and retract our steps to see where we went wrong the first time. The pages splattered with ideas, some brilliant, others completely useless to us now. The victory world felt small in that moment, our small, no matter how fleeting, had spiralled into something far larger than the three of us.

Still can’t believe it. Azaria’s POV I walked into my room after I was back home and for the first time I could see how small our house was. My room was small. So was Ariana and Lukas’s. It wasn’t because I compare my house to my best friend’s house, like I always did. It was that feeling I had read about in a novel. The character had gone a trip away from hinge and only to come home to find almost everything looking small in their eyes.

Marcus on the other side of the wall, running his hand along his length like he said he would. The throbbing between my legs becomes more insistent, and I grab a novel I've been reading, flopping onto the bed and flipping open the book, my eyes landing right on…a sex scene. I slam the book closed. Choosing a romance novel to distract myself is entirely unhelpful.

“Hey, where are you stumbling off to?” “Jack is taking us out for lunch, so I am off to get some shoes” I told him as I slowly carried on walking. I looked up the stairs and swallowed the lump in my throat. I needed to stop been a wimp and do this. I lifted my left leg and placed it on the first step. “See easy” I told myself as I lifted my right leg and put it on the next step “just keep going till you reach the top, slow and steady wins the race” I kept telling myself as I slowly made my way up the stairs. I finally made it to the top and looked down to see Jack. “I made it” I smiled down at him.

The second piece was just the same as the first, but adding more detail and background after they viewed their mistakes in the first. "Taking both of these." Ren rolled them up. "I take it as an illustration of your old home?" Two gave him a sad nod. "Hmm, ok. Come along now." Ren pulled the book to him and started to read as they walked. They made it out of the courtyard when Zero and Three ran up. "Can we come as well, Master?" Zero asked. Three just looked on excitied.

Not until I get answers. She put out the lamp, darkening the room and she stayed a moment longer, while her eyes acclimated. From upstairs came the muffled noise of Peter turning in his sleep. The house breathed. And in that breath, Stephanie felt it, an almost imperceptible fault line beneath her feet. Not a pause. Not yet. Just a faint crack from waiting. Things don’t always break with a bang, she thought as the words began to form uninvited on her way to the stairs.

Ava stood there, her breathing steady, her thoughts clear, because that exchange had confirmed something important, she did not need to break the system immediately, she needed to move within it until it shifted on its own. She walked slowly to the table. Opened the notebook. Her eyes moved over every line she had written since this began. Then she added one more. He is no longer dismissing me. Her fingers paused. Then she wrote again. That is the beginning. Her gaze lifted slowly. Calm. Focused. Because now she understood something clearly. Change was not sudden. It was built. And she was already building it One step at a time.

“Great work. You finished quickly. I’ll check your answers and we’ll continue from there tomorrow.” I stared at him, incredulous. “Tomorrow? That’s it?” “Yes,” he said, nodding. “We’ll take it one step at a time.” I exhaled loudly, leaning back in the chair. One step at a time. One small step toward rebuilding my life… and one small step of humiliation, apparently.
