Smelled blood. The SUV hummed along the back roads, heading north. The sun was fully up now, blazing through the tinted windows, and the Texas scrubland stretched endlessly in every direction. Flat and brown and indifferent, the kind of landscape that had no interest in what had happened to us last night or the night before. It just kept going.

The body slumped, lifeless. Torin stripped the enforcer's leathers, pulling them on over his battered frame. They hung loose, stained with rogue musk that made his wolf snarl inside. He grabbed the keys and rifle, slipping into the tunnels like a shadow. The camp above buzzed with activity—rogues sharpening blades, roasting meat over fires, their eyes darting toward Malachi's tent where Lyra's captivity loomed. Torin skirted the edges, heart hammering at every close call, until he burst through the outer perimeter into the Dead Lands' barren wilds. Freedom hit like a slap, but it tasted like ash without her.
