The wind whistled past her ears, and above her was a sky full of stars and a round moon. She saw someone rushing towards her. She thought the scene felt so familiar. Amidst the swaying tree shadows, various scenes kept flashing before her eyes. She looked at the figure above, who was blocking the moonlight. Tears streamed down her cheeks. Slowly, she reached out her hand, and the person above extended his. Their hands could not touch each other, even though they were only two feet apart. The mountain wind howled, and the wind that blew past obscured her vision.

Gaze soft and almost mesmerized. We’re closer than I realized. Too close. So close our lips are barely a breath apart.

We talked about the old days—turning over photographs, one by one. Each picture carried a memory, and the memories never seemed to run out. The moon slowly began to set, and my body started to turn transparent again. "Greyson," my voice was fading. "I have to leave now. The Moon Goddess is calling me." He frantically tried to grab my hand. "Don't go! Stay with me a little longer..." I smiled gently, my body beginning to drift upward, out of my control. "Millie, let me hold you one last time," he cried out.

Somehow, in their eyes, I had become the problem. We weren't the same kind of people. I apologized to Wyatt for wrecking his birthday and told him plainly I wouldn't regret walking away. My application for overseas study had already been approved. In a month, I would leave Riverton for a program in Amerinth. For the next few days, Bernard didn't contact me, but Vera did. She kept sending me intimate photos of the two of them. I neither responded nor blocked her. I wanted to see how long their little fling could last.

"To be honest, when I saw you this afternoon, I just felt irritated to death. I wanted you gone. That’s why, when you handed me the divorce papers, I didn’t even think. I just signed." His voice cracked, softer now, "But when you walked away without looking back… my heart clenched. And when that chandelier fell, my body just moved on instinct. You cannot get hurt. You cannot leave me." My tears spilled before I could stop them. Ethan’s eyes went red. He fumbled for tissues, trying to wipe my tears. I caught his wrist and took the tissues myself.

I took a deep breath, opened the tracker on Edith's smartwatch, and drove to the location: an amusement park. There, I stopped dead. Victor, in a casual t-shirt and jeans, held Helene close, their laughter warm and intimate. Edith was riding a carousel, grinning and posing for photos. Helene snapped pictures, then leaned in to kiss Victor's cheek. They looked like a perfect family of three, while I stood rooted, an outsider stealing glances at their happiness. This park was famous. I'd suggested bringing Edith here so many times, but she had always dismissed me. "Mom, you're an adult. Don't be so childish. This place is a waste of time."

I need your attention. I need to know that I matter to you, just once. Why can’t you see me the way I see you? Why can’t you care? Every time you pull away, every time you don’t look at me, it pulls me deeper into this. I need you to notice. I need you to feel it too. But you don’t. And I don’t know how much longer I can take it.

He stepped closer instead, his face closer to her hair. “I still can’t believe you don’t remember me. You must have been with a lot of guys for you to forget” he accused. “For goodness sake, I have no idea what you are talking about” Katrina responded frustratingly. “Of course you don’t” he hissed. Unable to bear it, Katrina pushed and finally managed to turn around but it seemed to be a big mistake as their bodies stood barely an inch away from each other. She seized a breath before releasing slowly and glanced up at him. “Whatever it is, it wouldn’t matter” she told him.
