The next morning, before Victor woke, I left the house and headed straight for the electronics store.
I took my time to browse before choosing cameras with solid specs. It was small, discreet, and equipped with night vision sharp enough to see through darkness. When I tucked it carefully into my bag, my heart steadied with a quiet resolve.
By the time I returned home, Victor was gone. He always went downstairs in the mornings to play chess with the other retired men. It was the only part of the day I felt completely safe.
I chose several key locations: a corner in the living room, the end of the hallway, and my bedroom.
