Agrona yells, the sounds of her laughter following shortly after. “ Kill her! ” A girl in the crowd murmurs. “ Kill her! ” Another one joins. “ Kill her! ” It becomes a chorus until every single one of them chants the same words and closes the distance to me.

But even supposing the sky was flashing lights, the people's fingers finally fell to something else. I looked where they were. There lay a red carpet unrolled from the gate, so precise it appeared to have been unrolled by invisible hands. And then, without warning, the crowd started to chant, cheer, clap. "Serena! Sophia! Serena! Sophia!" For a moment, I stopped. Why was everyone chanting our names? Sophia tugged at my wrist softly. "Come on, I think they're hollering for us." She said this tremulously, and against my better judgment, I followed her.

“CAPITALS! CAPITALS! CAPITALS!” I could hear the chanting two blocks away from Mama Janes, and when I arrived at the pep rally, the parking lot was brimming with people all decked out in blue. Coach stood at the front, screaming at the crowd about ‘destroying these suckers who think they could come into our town and beat us.’ The football team and cheer squad are standing on either side of him, egging the crowd on. In the middle of the rally stood a straw man dressed in a red Mountford jersey, and I had a feeling that this would be the bonfire.

Some just stared, unblinking. Then they all spoke at once, their voices layering over each other until it was one deafening sound. "Let me in." My heart slammed against my ribs. "No." "Let me in." I backed away, tripping over my own feet. "No." "Let me in." "Shut up." "Let me in." I clapped my hands over my ears. "Stop!" "Let me in." "STOP!" They didn't stop. The chant kept building. "Let me in. Let me in. Let me in. LET ME IN."

The game officially began. The muffled rumble of the stands swelled into a deafening roar, echoing off the high rafters. "Asher! Asher! Asher!" The crowd chanted in unison, their voices pounding against the glass barriers. Ugh this people are crazier than i thought. Caleb glided effortlessly up to my left side, leaning over his stick with a sudden, teasing grin cutting across his face. "Listen to that. Your people are calling for you, man."

The gym was full of energy. The rhythmic thump of basketballs against the polished hardwood floor echoed loudly, creating a steady beat that was nearly drowned out by the enthusiastic, wild cheers erupting from the students packed into the bleachers. Ariel, standing among her cheer squad, felt the adrenaline surge through her veins. Her arms were raised high, the pom-poms flying as she shouted the familiar chant, her voice joining the collective roar: “Let’s go Panthers! Let’s go!”

‘Kill, kill’ my wolf’s voice sounded repeatedly. “ARGHOOH, ARGHOOH, ARGHOOH LIVE OR DIE WE FIGHT” The chant began “ARGHOOH, ARGHOOH, ARGHOOH LIVE OR DIE WE FIGHT” Their cups hitting the bars in a steady tempo with the words. “ARGHOOH, ARGHOOH, ARGHOOH LIVE OR DIE WE FIGHT” The beat of my heart slowed to match the rhythm as the crowd began to chant after them.

"I love Beth." T'was a declaration so gentle, it floated with the gentle breeze. "I love Beth." The same. She halted. "I love Beth," a few voices echoed. She turned her head to the side. "I love Beth," a few more voices joined in, attracting more till it became a full blown chant. She turned fully and looked around. Those who weren't chanting either had their phones up or were shouting things like, "Say yes," and "Stay," at her.

He tapped our shoulders, and we lined up, ready to take the field. As we emerged into the bright sunlight, the sounds of the cheering crowd hit me like a wave. I scanned the stands, my eyes scrolling to the side, where I saw the cheerleading team going wild, waving their pom-poms and dancing in unison. They were chanting, "Go, Black Wolves! Go, Black Wolves!" I turned my focus back to the task at hand. Our opponents, the Red Devils, were already on the field, warming up. We shook hands, a customary gesture of respect, before taking our positions.
