“You’re all bark and no bite.” Mason’s jaw flexed, color climbed up his neck. “I’ll fuck you up.” Kyle stepped in until their chests were almost touching. The height difference wasn’t dramatic, but the presence was. Kyle carried himself like someone who had never once lost a fight. “I don’t think that’s something you wanna say to your captain.” He reached out, grabbed the front of Mason’s shirt with both hands, and gave it two sharp little tugs like he was brushing imaginary dirt off.

He wasn't yelling or trying to sound like a tragic hero—he just stated it like a cold fact. "He told me if I wasn't the best guy on the ice, I was wasting his time and his money," Carter added, his knuckles turning a little pale around the wooden stick. "So... I get it. Having stuff in your past you don't feel like sharing with anybody." I stared at the side of his profile. The arrogant, untouchable hockey captain vibe he wore around campus completely melted away, leaving just a guy who had been pushed way too hard for way too long.

"You want the other part." "Yes." "I have never moved that fast in my life," he repeated, quieter now, each word deliberate, stripping away every ounce of his usual arrogant captain swagger. "Because there was nothing left in me that could have let them take you. Nothing rational. Nothing careful. Just five years of pretending you were an enemy, breaking apart in about four seconds flat." My throat worked overtime, desperately searching for a witty comeback that wouldn't make me sound like a teenager reading a diary. "You're supposed to be my enemy."

The sound died instantly. And silence felt like breathing again. Cameron and Caleb gasped for air, recovering their senses. I staggered and turned. A slow clap echoed from the shadows. “Well done.” A figure stepped forward. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Clean uniform. A scar running from his eye to his jaw. His presence alone silenced the room. The soldiers around him lowered their weapons immediately. “Captain,” they saluted. “Leave,” he ordered. One soldier hesitated. “Sir, we—”

The soldier waved his hand and said: " Thank you for your concern Mr Danial but this is our job and we fulfil our duties whenever we are needed." Danial felt weird about the soldier calling him Mr so he said "Captain, please don't call me Mr You are older than me, and it feels rather formal. Just call me Danial," he said, trying to convey a sense of camaraderie. The captain smiled faintly, appreciating the gesture. "Very well, Danial. I suppose we can dispense with formalities for now. Just keep in mind that we are still on a mission, and I must maintain a level of professionalism."

We sat like that a while longer, easy conversation filling the space, and for a little while I let myself forget the ache in my chest that had nothing to do with my ankle. Eventually he stood, promising to come back tomorrow, and the room fell quiet again once he'd gone, just the steady beep of the monitor and my own thoughts circling back to everything Priya had told me. One in particular caught my eye. Dante Kade. Captain. Number 17. Ice-blue eyes. A name that came with a hundred headlines and at least five fangirl forums I pretended not to browse. He looked lethal. The kind of lethal that made smart girls run and stupid girls fall. I wasn’t here to do either. I tore my eyes away from the poster and squared my shoulders. The heel of my boot clicked against the tile with more attitude than I felt. I could fake it. I’d faked worse.

The sergeant ignored her, his focus solely on Joseph. Minutes felt like hours before the soldier returned, nodding to the sergeant. “He’s telling the truth. Records confirm he’s with the Combat force and Major Erickson son.” The sergeant’s eyes narrowed, his grip tightening on Joseph’s shirt before finally releasing him. “Alright, Captain Joseph.
