When it finally broke free, it wasn’t polite.
It was a howl.
Low at first, then richer, cleaner than any sound I’d ever made. It flooded the edges of the room and pushed any trace of fear from them. It climbed higher unapologetically and with it climbed a second, smaller voice that had always been mine and had always been missing.
I clapped both hands over my mouth too late. The sound had already found the gaps in the wood and exploded outwards into the hall beyond it, the air above that, and perhaps...horrifyingly, wonderfully...flooded into the ears that it had been born to reach.
